Thalia Hummel werd op 20 februari 1975 geboren in Assen. In 1993 behaalde zij haar VWO-diploma aan het Farel College te Amersfoort, waarna zij geneeskunde ging studeren aan de Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam. Na het behalen van haar artsexamen (cum laude) in 2000, werkte zij als ANIOS op de afdeling kindergeneeskunde van het Gemini Ziekenhuis in Den Helder en de afdeling kindergeneeskunde van het Westfriesgasthuis in Hoorn. De opleiding tot kinderarts volgde zij in het Emma Kinderziekenhuis/AMC in Amsterdam (prof. dr. H.S.A. Heymans) met een perifere stage in het Medisch Spectrum Alkmaar (dr. W.W.M. Hack, †). Van mei 2008 tot juni 2011 specialiseerde zij zich tot kinderarts- maag-darm-leverziekten, tevens in het Emma Kinderziekenhuis/AMC. In 2009 begon zij met het onderzoek beschreven in dit proefschrift. Sinds juni 2011 is zij werkzaam als kinderarts-maag-darm-leverziekten in het Medisch Spectrum Twente in Enschede.
