On 18 S e p te m b e r 193*+ th e I n d i a n n e w s p a p e rs c a r r i e d a lo n g s t a t e ­ m ent by th e M ahatm a. I t w as t r u e h e .w a s c o n te m p la tin g " s e v e r i n g a l l p h y s i c a l c o n n e c tio n w ith th e C o n g r e s s ." B ut some o f h i s f r i e n d s on th e

He d id n o t f a u l t t h e i r p e r s o n a l l o y a l t y , b u t he d i d n ' t w an t p e r s o n a l l o y a l t y t o b in d them t o a p ro g ram th e y d id n o t b e l i e v e i n . P e r h a p s h i s s u p p o r t o f th e c h a r k h a ( s p i n n i n g w h e e l) i n th e f a c e o f t h e i r r e s i s t a n c e t o i t was h y p o c r i t i c a l , he s a i d :
