Abstract

M y t h e s i s is d i v i d e d into six c h a p t e r s w h i c h i n c l u d e a g e n e r a l o v e r v i e w of t h e s o c i o - p o l i t i c a l an d e c o n o m i c b a c k g r o u n d of the M a l a y M u s l i m society, a d e f i n i t i o n of t h e t e r m M a l a y a n d M u s l i m a n d t h e v a r i o u s i n t e r p r e t a t i o n s that a r i s e f r o m t h e s e d e f i n i t i o n s , the c h a n g e s e x p e r i e n c e d b y th e M u s l i m s o c i e t y b e f o r e a n d a f t e r M a l a y s i a ' s I n d e p e n d e n c e , t h e i m p o r t a n c e of I s l a m in th e e v e r y d a y life of the M u s l i m s , the s u b s e q u e n t d e v e l o p m e n t s of the M a l a y t e x t u a l t r a d i t i o n s t a r t i n g f r o m t h e c o m i n g of Isl"am to M a l a y s i a u n t i l th e p r e s e n t day.

C h a p t e r two d e a l s (briefly) w i t h 'Sastra K i t a b ’ a n d d i s c u s s the e f f o r t s to r e - i n t e r p r e t e the m e a n i n g of th e t e r m 'Islamic l i t e r a t u r e ' as a re s u l t of t h e I s l a m i c r e s u r g e n c e in M a l a y s i a th a t b e g a n in t h e e a r l y 1970's.

T h e t e x t u a l a n a l y s i s in C h a p t e r T h r e e is the m a i n p a r t of m y study. It f o c u s e s o n l y on I s l a m i c b o o k s w r i t t e n in M a l a y f r o m 1975 to t h e p r e s e n t d a y (1992) a n d i n c l u d e s d i s c u s s i o n of w o r k s o n Theology, 'Akida', I s l a m i c law, ' F i k h 1, I s l a m i c J u r i s p r u d e n c e , d e v o t i o n s e r v ices, 'ibadiTt1, 1 m u'"amalat' , mar r i a g e ,
