Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

Increased rainfall has been observed over Hispaniola over the past few weeks, gradually relieving dryness in the region.
Increased rainfall has continued over Hispaniola during the past seven days. Light to moderate (10 – 40 mm) rains were observed over Haiti, while heavy (> 100 mm) downpours fell over east-central Dominican Republic. Rainfall was average to below-average over Haiti; while it was average to above-average over the Dominican Republic during the past week. The above-average rains observed across Hispaniola over the past several weeks have helped to neutralize moisture deficits that had resulted from a poor rainfall distribution during June. The continuation of favorable rainfall frequency and intensity is expected to aid crops to recover from previous moisture stress over many local growing areas of the region. For next week, dry and stable air mass is expected to dominate the weather over Hispaniola. Light (< 30 mm) rains are forecast over much of Haiti. However, easterly waves and forecast, strong, easterly winds could produce localized heavy (> 50 mm) rains over southern Haiti, and the northeastern, southeastern, and central mountainous regions of the Dominican Republic.
