Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

July 5 – July 11, 2012

While Haiti received light to moderate rainfall, much of the Dominican Republic observed little rains during the past week.

During the past seven days, an increase in rainfall was observed over Haiti, while much of the eastern half of Hispaniola observed little (< 10 mm) rains. In Haiti, the increased rainfall during the past week was above-average and helped to partially offset rainfall deficits accumulated over the past thirty days. Meanwhile, the observed, little rains during the past seven days have contributed to maintain thirty-day rainfall deficits over the Dominican Republic. The uneven distribution of rainfall during the past several weeks has already negatively impacted vegetation conditions in the northern departments of Haiti and northwestern Dominican Republic. The continuation of poor rainfall distribution could further degrade crop conditions and possibly reduce seasonal yields in the region. For next week, Hispaniola is expected to receive light rainfall. However, tropical wave activities could bring heavy (> 50 mm) rainfall over localized areas of southern Haiti and eastern Dominican Republic.

For the next seven days, light to moderate rains are forecast across Hispaniola (5-20mm) with locally higher amounts of rain (>20mm) possible across central/eastern Dominican

For the second consecutive week, an increase in rainfall was observed over Hispaniola, particularly Haiti, where moderate to heavy (30 - 75 mm) rains were recorded over the

Rainfall was above-average over much of Haiti during the past week and has contributed significantly to erode rainfall deficits observed over the dry portions of the country

The above-average rains observed across Hispaniola over the past several weeks have helped to neutralize moisture deficits that had resulted from a poor rainfall distribution

However, the bulk of the rainfall, with downpours exceeding 100 mm was recorded over the central parts of the Island, including central Haiti, central, and southern Dominican

For next week, heavy rain and strong winds are expected over Haiti, particularly, the southern Peninsula, and neighboring Dominican Republic as CHANTAL is forecast

Although the average to above-average rain during the past week helped to reduce thirty-day rainfall deficits in half in southern Haiti, a poor rainfall distribution since the start
