Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

July 12 – July 18, 2012

Increased rainfall has been observed over Hispaniola for the second consecutive week.

For the second consecutive week, an increase in rainfall was observed over Hispaniola, particularly Haiti, where moderate to heavy (30 - 75 mm) rains were recorded over the southern Peninsula and portions of the l’Artibonite, Centre, and Nord Est departments.

Light to moderate (10 - 30 mm) rains fell also over the dry portions across the northern departments of the country, helping to ease the dryness that has settled in the region over the past several weeks. The continuation of increased rainfall is expected to further reduce moisture stress and aid cropping activities in Haiti. Further east, moderate to heavy rains were observed across the central parts of the Dominican Republic during the past week. For the next seven days, light (< 30 mm) rainfall is in general expected over Hispaniola. However, tropical wave activities could result in moderate to locally heavy (30 - 75 mm) rainfall across the eastern half of Haiti and central Dominican Republic during the next week.
