Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET
June 27 – July 3, 2013
Heavy rain was observed across eastern portions of the Dominican Republic.
During the past seven days, light to moderate rain (10-50mm) was recorded across most of Hispaniola. The highest precipitation amounts (30-50mm) were observed across eastern portions of the Dominican Republic. In Haiti, localized moderate rains were observed near the capital of Port-Au-Prince, with lighter rains elsewhere. The reduction in weekly rainfall across the Artibonite and Centre departments of Haiti provided relief to flood-affected areas. However, across already drier-than-average areas in southern Haiti, weekly rains were light, maintaining dry ground conditions. Dating back to May 1, seasonal rainfall in the Nippes, Sud and Grand’Anise departments of southern Haiti and in southwestern Dominican Republic has been less than 50% of normal. Seasonal rainfall in the Ouest and Sud-Est departments of southern Haiti has also been below-average. For the next week, moderate to heavy rain (>20mm) is forecast for central and eastern Dominican Republic and central Haiti. In contrast, light to moderate rain is expected across southern Haiti and southwestern Dominican Republic.
