Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

July 21 – July 27, 2011

During the past week, the central portions of Haiti have received an above-average rainfall, while average rainfall has fallen elsewhere.

During the past week, heavy (> 50mm) rains fell across the central portions of Haiti, including the central, western, and southeastern departments. The heaviest (> 100mm) rainfall was recorded over portions of the central department of Haiti. Light to moderate (10- 30mm) rainfall was observed elsewhere. The more widespread distribution of rainfall that was observed during the past seven days has helped to reduce the thirty-day rainfall deficits across the western half of northern and southern Haiti. Although those regions have only received mild (20-50mm) moisture deficits during the last thirty days, the lack of rainfall since the beginning of the month has already led to developing dryness, preventing farmers from sowing activities in many local areas. Rainfall forecast during the next observation period suggests a decrease in rains over much of Haiti, with localized heavy (> 50mm) rains in the southeast and portions of the Artibonite department of Haiti. The reduction of rainfall could further worsen the dryness in portions of Haiti.
