Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET
June 13 – June 19, 2013
Locally moderate to heavy rain was observed across northern Haiti.
During the past seven days, moderate to locally heavy rain (>20mm) was observed across northern Haiti and localized areas in western and central Dominican Republic. The abundant rains in Haiti increased thirty-day rainfall surpluses across the Artibonite, Centre and Nord-Est departments of Haiti. In contrast, light rains (<10mm) were observed elsewhere across Hispaniola. The below-average weekly rainfall in southern Hispaniola helped to increase seasonal and thirty-day rainfall deficits. The largest seasonal deficits exist across the southwestern peninsula of Haiti in the Nippes, Sud and Grand’Anse departments. Seasonal rainfall to date has been less than 25% of normal. The lack of rains has helped create dry ground conditions, likely negatively impacting cropping activities. For the next week, locally moderate to heavy rain is forecast across northern Haiti and central Dominican Republic. However, light amounts of rain (<15mm) are forecast across already drier-than-average regions of southern Hispaniola, which will likely increase seasonal rainfall deficits.
