Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET
June 14 – June 20, 2012
Little precipitation was observed across Hispaniola during the past week.
During the past week, little to no rain (<10mm) was observed across Hispaniola. The heaviest precipitation (5-25mm) occurred in localized portions of western Dominican Republic. This was the third consecutive week of below-average rains across Hispaniola. The lack of adequate rainfall has occurred after a good start to the growing season in early May where rains were above-average and well distributed. The recent dry period has negatively impacted crops planted in April and May and crops have begun to wither. If the dry conditions continue, seasonal crop production will likely be below-average for the season. For the next several days, little to no rain is expected across much of Hispaniola. However, by the end of the observation period an increase in moisture is forecast across Hispaniola as light to moderate rain (5-30mm) is expected.
Locally heavy amounts (>40mm) could occur in localized areas in southern Hispaniola. Any rains across southern Haiti will help reduce seasonal rainfall deficits and provide beneficial ground moisture for cropping activities.
