Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET
May 10 – May 16, 2012
Not much relief to heavy rains expected over portions of Hispaniola during the next week.
During the past seven days, a continuation of moderate to locally high precipitation amounts (30-75mm) were received across Hispaniola, with the heaviest amounts observed over the Dominican Republic. In Haiti, rainfall was generally lighter in the east, with the heaviest rainfall located in the southern peninsula and central department along the border. Since the beginning of April, all of Hispaniola remains above-average in rainfall and available moisture with monthly precipitation surpluses as high as 100mm centered across western Dominican Republic. The anomalously wet conditions have been the result of several consecutive weeks of enhanced rainfall, with little breaks in day to day precipitation. Although this has helped to offset long-term moisture deficits from suppressed rainfall earlier in the year, it has sustained the potential for localized flooding, landslides in the higher elevations, and led to several fatalities in Haiti over the past couple of weeks. For the upcoming outlook period, forecasts suggest a continuation of anomalously wet conditions during the next week.
