Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

March 29 – April 4, 2012

Early seasonal rain showers continue during late March.

During the last week, fair to moderate amounts of precipitation continued across southern and central portions of Haiti and in portions of western Dominican Republic. In Haiti, rainfall amounts ranging between 5-20mm were received along the southern peninsula, with locally higher amounts in the Ouest department along the Dominican Republic border. The recent increase in rainfall during the last dekad of March has helped to neutralize winter moisture deficits extending back to the start of the year. This is expected to provide favorable ground moisture for planting of seasonal crops during the next several weeks. Rainfall forecasts suggest a continuation of average to above average rainfall into early April.
