Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

March 8 – March 14, 2012

Increased rainfall is expected for portions of southern Haiti during early March.

During the last seven days, light to fair amounts of precipitation were received across Hispaniola. The highest rainfall amounts were observed in the central and southern departments of Haiti (5-20mm), with lighter amounts observed along the coastline of the Dominican Republic. Weekly rainfall estimates near Port Au Prince Haiti marked the first time with measurable rainfall since the beginning of the year. Although seasonal precipitation is at a climatological minimum during January and February, rainfall has remained below-average since the beginning of the year and has resulted in moisture deficits and unfavorable ground conditions for winter cropping activities in northern Haiti. During the next seven days, precipitation forecasts suggest a slight increase in precipitation across the island. Above average rainfall amounts between 10-30mm are expected for southern portions of Haiti, with potentially higher amounts for parts of eastern Dominican Republic.
