Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

March 22 – March 28, 2012

Locally heavy rainfall received over central and southern Haiti during the last week.

During the last seven days, much of Hispaniola observed a robust increase in rainfall during the middle of March. Widespread rainfall amounts ranging between 5-20mm were received in many departments, with the heaviest rainfall (>30mm) centered across the central Haiti and Dominican Republic border. The past weeks rainfall distribution marks the second consecutive week where rainfall has been above-average following an anomalously dry offseason beginning in January. These above-average rains are expected to help relieve drought conditions in the north, and provide favorable ground moisture for planting of seasonal crops during the next several weeks. Rainfall forecasts suggest a continuation of average to above average rainfall into late March.
