Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET
March 14 – March 20, 2013
Increased rainfall observed over western Hispaniola during the last week.
Another week of high rainfall was again observed across the Gulf of Gonaives, with moderate showers observed across the eastern Haiti during the last seven days. Weekly precipitation amounts ranging between 10-25mm were received in the Artibonite, Nord-Ouest, Nord, and Grand Anse departments of Haiti, with little to no rainfall observed throughout the rest of the island. Despite the increase in moisture and rains in the northwest, below-average moisture condition continues to provide unfavorable ground moisture conditions over northern Hispaniola. Many local areas in the Nord-Ouest, Nord, and Nord-Est departments of Haiti continue to experience less than half of their normal rainfall accumulations since the beginning of the year. Precipitation forecasts suggest an increase in rainfall during the next seven days, with the probability for locally moderate rainfall across northern Hispaniola. As a result, some relief to the dryness is expected over northern Hispaniola during the middle of March.
