Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

February 23 – February 29, 2012

Dryness continues across Hispaniola.

The influence of a high pressure system adjacent to Hispaniola has dominated meteorological conditions over Haiti and the Dominican Republic during the past week. This has brought stable air mass and resulted in an overall suppression of rainfall over Hispaniola as little to no (< 10 mm) rainfall was observed across much of the region during the past week. During the past thirty days, rainfall deficits have persisted across northern Haiti and northwestern Dominican Republic, with negative rainfall anomalies ranging between 20 and 50 mm. These regions have received rainfall less than 25 percent of their averages during the past thirty days, maintaining drought conditions over the areas during the past several months. For the next week, while light (< 20 mm) rainfall is forecast across the eastern two-thirds of the Dominican Republic and southern peninsula of Haiti, suppressed rainfall is expected over the northern and central portions of Haiti. The continued reduced rainfall amounts could further negatively impact rain-fed crops in the region.
