Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

January 26 – February 1, 2012

Locally light to moderate rain showers were observed across central and southern Hispaniola.

During the past seven days, light rainfall (< 10 mm) was observed across much of Hispaniola. The highest precipitation totals (10-40 mm) were recorded along the southern border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic and in localized areas along the northern coastline of the Dominican Republic. In Puerto Plata along the northern coastline of the Dominican Republic, rain gauge measurements recorded 46 mm on January 18th. The heavy rain across northern Hispaniola will provide relief from dry conditions that have persisted since December. The increase in rains during January have allowed for crops in irrigated areas to grow well across northern Hispaniola, although crops that rely on rain are still not performing as well. For the next week, light to moderate rain showers (10-30 mm) are forecast across northern and northeastern Hispaniola while central and southern Dominican Republic and much of Haiti can expect little to no precipitation.
