Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

January 12 – January 18, 2012

Little rainfall was observed across Haiti while localized moderate rain fell in eastern Domincan Republic.

During the past seven days, light precipitation (< 10 mm) was observed across most of Hispaniola. The heaviest precipitation (10-20 mm) was recorded across localized portions of southern and eastern Dominican Republic. Climatologically, rainfall during January across Hispaniola is expected to be light with the highest rainfall totals along the northern coastline of Hispaniola. However, the northern coastline of the Dominican Republic and Haiti has observed moderately below-average rainfall (20-75 mm) since December.

Dry conditions along the northern half of Hispaniola negatively affected winter cropping activities in the region but recent rains have improved ground conditions. For the next week, an increase in rainfall is forecast over northeastern Dominican Republic as moderate rain (10-30 mm) is expected. The rains should help reduce rainfall deficits. Elsewhere, light rains (< 15 mm) are expected across Haiti and southern Dominican Republic.
