Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

April 12 – April 18, 2012

Forecasts suggest that heavy rainfall is likely to persist, potentially causing flooding and landslides across northern Hispaniola.

During the past seven days, heavy (> 50 mm) rainfall has continued over much of Hispaniola, with the heaviest (> 100 mm) rainfall observed over northern Haiti and northwestern Dominican Republic. Reports have already indicated flooding, which has affected many people in their respective regions during the past week. Meanwhile, moderate to heavy (30 – 75 mm) rainfall was recorded across the Ouest and Centre departments of Haiti, while light rainfall was observed elsewhere. The heavy rainfall during the past week has strengthened and has expanded the spatial extent of the thirty-day rainfall surpluses across Hispaniola. Over the next seven days, forecasts suggest recurrent frontal boundaries to bring heavy showers and thunderstorms over Hispaniola. The forecast heavy rainfall increases the potential for flooding and landslides, particularly across northern Haiti and northern Dominican Republic.
