Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET
February 16 – February 22, 2012
Little no rainfall was observed over much of Hispaniola during the past week.
Little to no (< 10 mm) rainfall was observed over much of Hispaniola during the past week, marking a continuation of the dry season in the region. The heaviest (10 – 40 mm) rainfall was recorded in south-central Dominican Republic. Since the beginning of the month, Hispaniola has received marginal rainfall compared to climatology. However, the little amounts of rainfall during the past thirty days have been insufficient to compensate the persistent weak to moderate (20 – 50 mm) moisture deficits in northern Haiti and neighboring northwestern Dominican Republic. If the reduced rainfall continues, it could negatively affect the development of rain-fed winter crops in northern Haiti. For the next observation period, model forecasts suggest light (< 20 mm) rainfall to continue over much of Hispaniola. However, the passage of frontal systems across the region could bring moderate (10 - 40 mm) rainfall in southeastern Haiti during the next week.
