Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

April 4 – April 10, 2013

Increase in rainfall expected during the next outlook period.

During the past week, little to light rain was generally observed across Hispaniola. The heaviest (20 – 40 mm) rain fell over the Ile de la Gonave of Haiti and localized areas of central Dominican Republic. Due to below- average rain during this winter season, reported adverse impacts have included lost crops, unfavorable ground conditions, and abnormally low river and lake water levels. During April, rainfall is climatologically expected to gradually increase across Hispaniola, with a total accumulation between 100 and 200 mm. During the next outlook period, an increase in rainfall is forecast over Hispaniola, with moderate to locally heavy rain over central and southern Haiti, west-central and southeastern Dominican Republic. The forecast enhanced rain should help to reduce thirty-day rainfall deficits and provide favorable ground moisture for the upcoming season.
