The l a s t c e n t u r y saw a p h e n o m e n a l g ro w th of a n a r c h i s m w ith in , and a s a r e a c t i o n to , the newly c o n s o lid a te d n a tio n ­ s t a t e s of E u r o p e . But it fa ile d to o f f e r , in any of i t s f o r m s , a c o h e r e n t guide to a c tio n o r a s u c c e s s f u l r o a d to a new s o c ie ty and a f t e r th e F i r s t W o rld W a r it b e c a m e a sp e n t f o r c e . Though the f a i l u r e of a n a r c h i s m in C h in a w as to s o m e e x te n t r e l a t e d to p a r t i c u l a r c o n d itio n s t h e r e , th is s tu d y w ill o f fe r a g e n e r a l c r i ti q u e of th e t h e o r e t i c a l w e a k ­ n e s s e s of a n a r c h i s m and s o m e e x p la n a tio n of the m o tiv a tio n of a n a r c h i s t i n t e l l e c t u a l s .

F i n a l l y some- o b s e r v a t i o n s about m e th o d o lo g y . How m u c h , one m a y a s k , c a n one l e a r n about h i s t o r y fro m the stu d y of th e thought of one m a n ? M any h i s t o r i a n s h av e p r o d u c e d , a s h a s G a s s t e r in h is w o r k on C h in e s e i n t e l l e c t u a l s and th e R e v o lu tio n of 1911, (3) a m a c r o view of s o c i e t a l and i n t e l l e c t u a l c h a n g e . B u t e v en w ith in s u c h a p r o ­ j e c t , the co m p o n e n t p a r t s m u s t- in e v ita b ly be p a r t i a l s tu d i e s of
