The s i x t h c e n tu r y A.H, came to an end w hilo th e I s la m ic E m pire, p a r t i c u l a r l y i n th e E a s t , was g e t t i n g w eaker due to th e s t r u g g l e f o r power betw een t h e T u rk is h , S e lju k s and t h e i r Mamluks. The A bbasid C a lip h a te h ad r e a c h e d i t s w eak est and m ost d e c ad e n t s ta g e ; i t was about t o c o l l a p s e . However, th e y fo u g h t among th e m se lv e s l a t e r on and w ere d r iv e n o u t o f J e ru s a le m f o r good i n th e y e a r 583 A.H. Mogul and T a r t a r t r i b e s in v a d e d th e Is la m ic Em pire from th e e a s t , commanded by th e r u t h l e s s Chengiz Khan who b ro u g h t them i n t o th e c i v i l i s e d w orld from C e n tr a l A s ia . S in c e th e I s la m ic Empire had no s tr o n g l e a d e r s of t h e c a l i b r e c f S a la d in , Chengiz Khan was c a p a b le o f w eakening th e Em pire a l l th e way from i t s e a s t e r n f r o n t i e r s t o th e b o r d e r s o f I r a q , a f t e r he had o c c u p ie d p a r t s o f I n d ia and China ( l )

A l-M u sta1 sim B i l - l a h was e l e c t e d C a lip h i n 640 A.H. Ho was a good and r e l i g i o u s man. H is Speech was w e ll-m an n e red and h i s m oral s ta n d a r d s w ere h ig h . However, he was u n c e r t a i n o f h im s e lf and h ad l i t t l e expe­

r i e n c e o f p u b l ic a f f a i r s o r o f ru n n in g a governm ent and k e e p in g i n to u c h w ith w hat was g o in g on a ro u d him . I n s h o r t , he d id n o t command much r e s p e c t . He s p e n t m ost o f h i s tim e l i s t e n i n g to s in g e r s and most o f h i s com panions wore commoners, w ith th e e x c e p tio n o f h is

m i n i s t e r Muayyid A l-D in Ib n A l - ’Alqami who was o f n o b le o r i g i n and had a keen m ind.

Al-M usta* sim was th e l a s t A bbasid C a lip h . Ho t h i n g o f much s i g n i ­ f ic a n c e happened d u r in g h i s r e i g n w ith th e e x c e p tio n o f lo o k in g A l-K arkh.

D uring th e f i n a l p e r io d o f h i s r e i g n , th e Mogul Army, l e d hy H ulngu, was g e t t i n g c l o s e r and c l o s e r . T h is d i d n o t seem t o w orry A l-M u sta 1sim o r to en c o u ra g e him to p r e p a r e f o r r e s i s t i n g th e Mogul in v a s i o n . I t seemed t h a t th e more he h e a rd a b o u t H ulagu1 s p r e p a r a t i o n and d e te rm in a ­ t i o n , th e more n e g li g e n t he becam e, a s i f he th o u g h t h i s Empire was th r e a te n e d by no d a n g e r. H is m in i s te r r e a l i s e d the g r a v i t y o f th e s i t u a t i o n and w ro te w arn in g him and a d v is in g him to wake up and 'take th e n e c e s s a r y p r e c a u ti o n s , b u t he c o n tin u e d to ig n o re su c h w a rn in g s.

H is com panions made him im agine t h a t t h e r e was no im m inent d a n g e r and t h a t h is m i n i s t e r was o n ly e x a g g e r a tin g m a tte r s i n o r d e r t o j u s t i f y g e t t i n g more money u n d e r th e p r e t e x t o f arm ing th e t r o o p s .

A l-M u sta 1s im 's ig n o ra n c e was d e e p en in g a s th e p r e p a r a t i o n and r e a d i n e s s o f h i s enem ies was m u ltip ly in g . F i n a l l y , t i e T a r t a r army re a c h e d Hamadhan whore th e y camped f o r a w h ile . H ulagu s e n t m essengers t o C a lip h A l-M u sta 1 sim who i n t u r n chose S h o ra fu d d in A b d u lla h B in A l- J a w z i, son o f th e c o u r t t e a c h e r , to go to H ulagu a s h i s m esse n g e r.

When H ulagu r e c e iv e d A l-M usta*sim m essenger and r e a l i s e d from h i s r e p l y t h a t he was on th e d e f e n s iv e , he d e c id e d to head f o r B aghdad. The T a r ta r army sa c k e d Baghdad, l o o t e d , s t o l e , m assacred women and c h il d r e n and p e rfo rm e d a l l s o r t s o f a t r o c i t i e s ,

H ulagu o rd e re d A l-M usta*sim to be b ro u g h t b e f o r e him w ith h i s f a m ily . He was r i d i c u l e d and h i s c h il d r e n wore h e ld i n c a p t i v i t y .

F i n a l l y , A l-M u sta 1 sim was p u t t o d e a th i n 656 A.H. and th u s Baghdad f e l l to th e T a r t a r army and th e A bbasid Em pire c o lla p s e d ( l ) .

Ib n -A l- T iq ta q a , how ever, d e c la r e s him in n o c e n t o f t h a t c h a rg e .

Ib n A l-*A lqam i became m i n i s t e r i n 642 A.H. He was f ir m and expe­

r ie n c e d i n t h e a f f a i r s o f governm ent a s w e ll a s b e in g a com petent

e s s a j i- s t and a u th o r . Ho was fo n d o f l i t e r a t u r e and p o e ts and en jo y e d th e company o f s c i e n t i s t s . A s u rv e y o f l i t e r a r y a c t i v i t y d u rin g th e s i x t h and s e v e n th c e n t u r i e s would show t h a t th e m ain t r e n d was one o f p r e s e r v a t io n and p r o t e c t i o n o f l i t e r a t u r e a g a in s t l o s t . T his tr e n d was b ro u g h t a b o u t by the Cru­

s a d e s i n th e E a s t, th e f a l l o f A n d a lu sia n c i t i e s and t h e Mogul wave w hich s t r e t c h e d a s f a r a s S i n a i (4) .

The n a tu r e o f p o e tr y d u r in g th e s i x t h and s e v e n th c e n t u r i e s was in f lu e n c e d i n su c h a manner t h a t p o e ts te n d e d t o be r e p e t i t i v e r a t h e r th a n b r i e f and to compose to o much p o e tr y th in k in g t h a t t h a t was more a t t r a c t i v e and t h a t i t h e lp e d to p a s s th e tim e . E loquence and c l a r i t y began to d is a p p e a r i n p o e tr y and S ufism became p o p u la r which meant r e p e t i t i o n and e la b o r a t i o n i n l i e u o f a c c u ra c y i n th e u s a g e o f words and c l a u s e s .

P o e ts w ere in f lu e n c e d by s o c i a l and economic c o n d i t i o n s . P o e try became l e s s a p p e a lin g and th e ra n k o f p o e ts w ith in th e e d u c a te d commu­

n i t y became lo w e r. P o e ts no lo n g e r e a rn e d a l o t o f money by composing p o e tr y i n p r a i s e o f th e r i c h , and th e whole r e l a t i o n s h i p betw een th e p r a i s i n g p o e t and th e e u lo g is e d n a ti o n became t h i n and n o t anywhere a s

s tr o n g o r c lo s e a s i t u s e d to bo i n e a r l i e r c e n t u r i e s .

The P e r s i a n was more pronounced i n S y r ia and I r a q where th e a r t o f D u b eit and Mawalia began t o compete w ith p o e tr y . I n E g y p t, how ever, p o e tr y was in f lu e n c e d by th e A n d a lu s ia n Muwashshah ( 2 ) , w hich i n d i c a t e d a s h i f t to w a rd s c o l l q u i a l p o e tr y ( Z a j a l ) , w h ile i n I r a q th e "ICan wa Kan" form o f l i t e r a t u r e began t o g a in s t r e n g t h ; i t s t a r t e d w ith le g e n d s
