the H o u s e of H u n t e r s , H is name, K u w e t e , f a t h e r of the L e o p a r d , w a s

f a m o u s for h i s h u n t i n g charms . On m y f a t h e r ’s sid e, the T o n w e f a m i l y

is a ro yal h o u s e in the B o u e ki n g d o m . G b e n e k i r i , m y a n c e s t o r , w a s the

f o u n d e r of U w e g w e r e t o w n in Boue. S o m e t i m e in t h e s i x t e e n t h c e n t u r y

d u r i n g the B a a n war, a p a r t f r o m Y o bue, w h o w a s n ot a c i t i z e n , G b e n e k i r i

w a s th e c i t i z e n c o m m a n d e r of the B o u e fo rc es . A f t e r the wa r, G b e n e k i r i

b e c a m e K i n g of a g r e a t e r Boue. He had to m o v e p a r t of his c o m p o u n d

f r o m U w e g w e r e to K o n o Bo ue , the c a p i t a l town, w h e r e he w a s g i v e n a

p e r m a n e n t p i e c e of ground. F o r m e n w i t h the t i t l e of G b e n e w e r e not

s u p p o s e d to be t e n a n t s on a n o t h e r p e r s o n ' s land.

T h i s p a r t i a l r e m o v a l of G b e n e k i r i to K o n o B o u e r e s u l t e d in the

e s t a b l i s h m e n t of tw o G a a n N o o b a n a , n a m e l y G a a n N o o b a n a U w e g w e r e , and

G a a n N o o b a n a K o n o . T h e line of r u l e r s h i p p a s s e d to t he latter.

G b e n e k i r i w a s l a ter d e i f i e d as th e "g od of w i n e " Y o m i i , in m e m o r y of

his w o r k and for i n t r o d u c i n g th e r a f f i a p a l m an d th e p a l m w i n e i n d u s t r y

C o n s i d e r i n g all t h e s e w o r k s , I n o t i c e d h o w c l o s e t h e s e s c h o l a r s

h a v e c o m e to c o m p l e t i n g the h i s t o r y of the r e g i o n , e x c e p t Ogoni.

T h e r e f o r e I d e c i d e d to fill the gap.

A l l this n o t w i t h s t a n d i n g , I p r o b a b l y w o u l d n o t h a v e b e e n the on e

to do this r e s e a r c h but fo r the a d v i c e of m y M.A. d e g r e e e x a m i n e r s at

the U n i v e r s i t y of M i n n e s o t a . A f t e r the or al e x a m i n a t i o n in th e s p r i n g

of 1980, t h e s e m e n told m e to c o n s i d e r s e r i o u s l y the id e a of t a k i n g up

a u n i v e r s i t y t e a c h i n g a p p o i n t m e n t w h e n I r e t u r n e d to N i g eria. T h i s

a d v i c e w a s g i v e n in th e k n o w l e d g e that I w a s a l r e a d y in g o v e r n m e n t

s e r v i c e an d th at I w a s g o i n g b a c k to r e s u m e m y d u t i e s as a s e n i o r

o f f i c i a l i n the R i v e r s S t a t e C i vil S e r v i c e C o m m i s s i o n . And, of c ourse,

the p r o s p e c t s w e r e v e r y a t t r a c t i v e . T h i s a d v i c e set m e t h i n k i n g m o r e

t h a n s e r i o u s l y . It b r o u g h t all the o t h e r f a c t o r s i n t o b o l d p e r s p e c t i v e
