Title: Remittances, Institutions and Economic Development
1. To understand the impact of remittances on development requires a broader framework of analysis that takes different multifaceted mechanisms into account through which remittances impact development outcomes.
2. The impact of remittances depends on who (social category) receives these inflows and how these inflows are utilized in the local economy.
3. The development effect of remittances is conditioned by a good institutional and policy environment. The accessibility of financial infrastructure, institutions and policy framework influence the volume of remittance inflows, the choice of agents and how these inflows are deployed.
4. The effect of remittances varies across and within countries, which can be attributed to the heterogeneity among countries in terms of effective institutional and development factors. These factors are country specific.
5. Following a PhD programme in a sandwich format with alternating stays at home and abroad has profound effects on the investigator and the worldview of the next generation. They think that their father lives at the airport.
