Dit onderzoek brengt verduidelijking omtrent verschillende ethische kwesties bij sociale robots.
Het draagt bij tot het opvullen van verschillende leemtes binnen deze ethische kwesties en bij
tal van punten van discussie in de literatuur.
Uit het onderzoek kan geconcludeerd worden dat zorgverleners niet vervangen mogen
worden door sociale robots. Ze mogen enkel dienen om de zorgverleners te assisteren en te
complementeren door specifieke deeltaken uit te voeren. Dit bevestigt wat er reeds werd gesteld
in de literatuur door verscheidene auteurs. Er werd duidelijk aangetoond dat de respondenten
verwachten dat de robot een positieve impact zal hebben op het welzijn van ouderen, door onder
andere het gezelschap dat ze kunnen bieden. De grootste voordelen van sociale robots in de
ouderenzorg waren volgens de respondenten de ontlasting van het zorgpersoneel en het
personeelstekort opvangen.
Er zal tevens toenemende druk zijn om zorgverleners in de toekomst te vervangen door
sociale robots. Deze druk kan vanuit de maatschappij komen, maar ook financiële druk is
mogelijk. Ook technologische vooruitgang zal hiertoe bijdragen. Het zijn dan ook vooral niet-
zorgtaken die sociale robots zullen overnemen, bijvoorbeeld het helpen onthouden aan de
inname van medicatie. Over de ethische gevolgen bestaat er verdeeldheid. Verbeterde
zorgkwaliteit, meer zelfstandigheid van de oudere, minder eenzaamheid en privacy gerelateerde
kwesties werden hierbij aangehaald.
Bovendien kan de interactie met een sociale robot weldegelijk waardevol zijn. Echter,
dit blijft zeer persoonlijk. Er is dan ook verdeeldheid over wat waardevolle interactie betekent.
De inhoud van de interactie en de bevordering van de levenskwaliteit bleken hierbij van belang.
Morele competenties kunnen geprogrammeerd worden bij de sociale robots. Dit zouden
vooral onze eigen waarden en geen immorele zaken moeten zijn. Sociale robots zullen ook een
impact hebben op de evolutie van menselijke interactie. Of deze impact positief of negatief zal
zijn, kan niet afgeleid worden uit de resultaten. Echter, zowel positieve als negatieve effecten
Uit het onderzoek blijkt tevens dat sociale robots niet aansprakelijk kunnen worden gesteld.
Alle respondenten schuiven deze aansprakelijkheid op naar de mens. De fabrikant, de
programmeur, de gebruiker of de eigenaar dienen aansprakelijk gesteld te worden, afhankelijk
van de situatie in kwestie. De aansprakelijkheid van sociale robots kan volgens de meerderheid
van de respondenten het best vergeleken worden met dat van dieren.
Verder kan er ook geconcludeerd worden dat sociale robots geen rechtspersoonlijkheid
dienen toegekend te krijgen. Beperkte rechtspersoonlijkheid, in de vorm van enkel rechten en
plichten, hoeft ook niet.
Volgens de respondenten zijn er meerdere personen die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de
correcte ethische werking van een sociale robot. Hierbij werden voornamelijk de fabrikant, de
programmeur, de gebruiker en de eigenaar aangehaald.
Bovendien gaan ouderen vaak onbewust de robot vertrouwen, maar toch blijkt kennis hebben
over de sociale robot belangrijk. De schending van de privacy van de oudere werd het meest
aangehaald als potentieel risico bij dit vertrouwen. Volgens de meerderheid van de
respondenten zouden verplichte licenties of opleidingen dan ook nuttig kunnen zijn.
Een wetgeving rond sociale robots blijkt wenselijk te zijn. Indien deze er zou komen,
moet dit op Europees niveau gebeuren. Enkelen stellen dat de wetgeving moet klaarliggen
voordat de sociale robots op grote schaal geïmplementeerd worden in de maatschappij.
Daarnaast kan geconcludeerd worden dat sociale robots niet beschermd moeten worden. De
voornaamste reden die werd aangehaald hierbij, is dat sociale robots niet-sensitief zijn. Over de
stelling van Kant bestaat er verdeeldheid. Een kleine meerderheid van de respondenten gaat
akkoord met de stelling. Ook bij het doortrekken van deze stelling naar sociale robots toe, is er
geen unanimiteit onder de respondenten. Een kleine meerderheid onder hen gaat tevens niet
akkoord met de stelling die wordt doorgetrokken.
mag hierbij niet onderschat worden. Ten tweede kan wetgeving een aanzienlijke rol spelen op
vlak van ethiek. Zo zouden aansprakelijkheid, verantwoordelijkheid en privacy gereguleerd
kunnen worden. Ten derde kunnen sociale robots vergeleken worden met dieren op vlak van
aansprakelijkheid, maar niet op vlak van bescherming.
Ten slotte kunnen nog enkele beleidsadviezen geformuleerd worden. Het is immers duidelijk
dat er nood is aan een beleid dat sociale robots reguleert. Daarbij moet er vooral aandacht zijn
voor aansprakelijkheid en privacy. Indien dergelijk beleid er zou komen, gebeurt dit best op
Europees niveau. Hierbij zou er rekening moeten gehouden worden met alle partijen die
betrokken zijn bij de bouw en de inzet van sociale robots. De invoering van verplichte licenties
en/of opleidingen voor de gebruikers is aan te raden. Het is het wel van belang dat men niet te
streng is, zodat het geen nefaste gevolgen heeft voor innovatie. Deze robots hebben immers
veel te bieden in de huidige samenleving en in de maatschappij van de toekomst.
