Overige overwegingen van de werkgroep bij het formuleren
van de aanbevelingen
De kans op meer of minder ernstige gebits- en/of kaakproblemen bij overlevenden van kinderkanker is aanzienlijk, vooral als de behandeling heeft plaatsgevonden op een jonge leeftijd voordat de
gebitsontwikkeling is voltooid, en vooral na radiotherapie op de mondholte. Maar ook op latere leeftijd kunnen ernstige problemen ontstaan, in het bijzonder als gevolg van verminderde speekselproductie. Om progressie van (potentiële) afwijkingen te voorkomen zijn vroegtijdige tandheelkundige
behandeling en waar mogelijk preventie daarom van het grootste belang. Daarom adviseert de werkgroep naast de tandheelkundige zorg, die in Nederland standaard is en in elk geval voor de beneden 18-jarigen in het basispakket van de zorgverzekeringen is opgenomen, extra aandacht c.q. gerichte controles voor overlevenden die behandeld zijn voor hun 13e levensjaar en voor alle overlevenden met bestraling op de mondholte. Patiënten (c.q. hun ouders) dienen tijdig gewezen te worden op het belang van een goede verzekering voor tandheelkundige hulp op volwassen leeftijd. Omdat veel van de late-effectenproblematiek ook bij professionals nog onvoldoende bekend is, adviseert de werkgroep tandheelkundige behandelaars van individuele patiënten goed te informeren over de risico‟s en de potentiële problemen.
