• Geïntegreerde spirituele zorg is een wezenlijk onderdeel van kwaliteitsvolle zorg.
• Vijf verbanden tussen spiritualiteit en gezondheid staan immers als een paal boven water binnen wetenschappelijk onderzoek.
• Andere onderzoekspunten (in de eerste plaats rond ‘outcome-onderzoek’) vragen nog extra uitdieping, maar worden ook volop aangegrepen door Vlaamse onderzoekers.
Bovenstaande onderzoeksresultaten tonen aan dat geïntegreerde spirituele zorg van wezenlijk belang is voor zorgvragers, naasten, zorgverleners én voor kwaliteitsvolle zorg tout court.
De vraag is uiteraard: Hoe moeten we deze onderzoeksresultaten begrijpen en integreren in de zorgpraktijk? Op welke onderzoeksresultaten kunnen we ons in de Vlaamse zorgcontext met zekerheid baseren? En welke onderzoeks-domeinen dienen nog verder geëxploreerd te worden?
Een aantal onderzoekspunten zijn al zo vaak in diverse contexten (her)bevestigd dat we kunnen stellen dat ze als een paal boven water staan in het onderzoek rond spirituele zorg.
Zo blijkt dat een acute verandering in iemands gezondheid een uitdaging voor iemands spiritualiteit met zich meebrengt (1.2.1.). Omgekeerd toonden diverse studies aan dat spiritualiteit een rol speelt in het omgaan met een ziekte/verlieservaring (1.2.2.). De mate waarin iemand zin en betekenis vindt, heeft een invloed heeft op iemands levenskwaliteit (1.2.3.), alsook op iemands beleving van gezondheid en zelfs op enkele meetbare indicatoren van de mentale en fysieke gezondheid (1.2.4.). Ook de impact van iemands wereldvisie – en indien van toepassing, zijn/haar beleving van religie op medische/ethische keuzes – kan (op basis van een waaier aan studies) niet genegeerd worden (1.2.5.). Met andere woorden: deze vijf verbanden tussen ‘spiritualiteit’ en ‘gezondheid(szorg)’ benadrukken dat het van wezenlijk belang is om aandacht te hebben voor iemands spirituele dimensie binnen de zorgcontext.
Wanneer we inzoomen op het ‘outcome-onderzoeksdomein’ waarin de effecten van spirituele zorg op zorgvragers worden bestudeerd, is onze eindconclusie tweevoudig.
Enerzijds kunnen we vaststellen dat enkele outcomes grondig werden aangetoond. Meer specifiek hebben we het dan over de impact van spirituele zorg op:
• ‘patiënttevredenheid én een hogere inschatting van kwaliteit van de zorg’ (4.1.-4.2.);
• ‘levenskwaliteit’ (punt 5);
• ‘lichamelijke en mentale gezondheid’ (punt 5). Hoewel dit laatste punt nog om verdere studie vraagt die zich toespitst op diverse diagnoses binnen Europese context.
26 Anderzijds is het outcome-onderzoek nog in volle ontwikkeling:
• De impact van spirituele zorg op de medische kosten werd reeds in één studie onderzocht, maar vraagt om verdere verifiëring in de Europese context.
• Hoewel enkele onderzoeken wijzen op het belang van spiritualiteit voor de veerkracht en het voorkomen van een burn-out bij zorgverleners, is er nood aan een uitgebreidere toetsing.
• Ook het specifieke verschil dat spiritueel zorgverleners maken voor hun collega-zorgvragers vraagt om verder onderzoek.
Conclusie? Er zijn nog voldoende onderzoeks-aanknopingspunten waarover onderzoekers zich kunnen buigen. En het positieve nieuws is dat deze onderzoekssporen momenteel ook in Vlaanderen verder worden onderzocht. Onderstaande studies spelen hierop in:
• Onderzoekers verbonden aan ERICH (European Research Institute of Chaplains in Healthcare) zetten momenteel heel sterk in op PROMS-onderzoek (zie punt 5), maar ook op onderzoek naar de impact van COVID-19 op spirituele zorg110, spiritueel welzijn en registratie door spiritueel zorgverleners in elektronische patiëntendossiers111.
• Daarnaast lopen momenteel drie doctoraatsonderzoeken in de Vlaamse zorgcontext:
o Lindsy Desmet (PhD, KU Leuven) spitst zich, onder supervisie van professor Annemie Dillen (promotor), professor Jessie Dezutter (co-promotor) en professor Anne Vandenhoeck (co-promotor), toe op de effecten van spirituele zorg door ziekenhuispastores op geriatrische zorgvragers. De resultaten van het eerste deel van haar onderzoek, waarin ze nagaat met welke spirituele noden ouderen doorgaans te kampen krijgen en wat de associatie is met symptomen van depressie en pijnintensiteit, zijn te raadplegen in de volgende artikels112. In het tweede luik van haar doctoraatsonderzoek (2021-2022) zullen de effecten (outcomes) van de interventie van pastores op het welzijn van ouderen gemeten worden aan de hand van een interventiestudie. Haar doctoraatsonderzoek wordt gefinancierd door het Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek.
o Eva Buelens (PhD, KU Leuven) doet eveneens onderzoek naar mogelijke uitkomsten van de zorg die ziekenhuispastores verlenen voor de hele ziekenhuispopulatie. Dit onderzoek bestaat zowel uit een quasi experimenteel onderzoek als een kwalitatief onderzoek bij patiënten en hun naasten. Zij voert dit onderzoek onder supervisie van professor Annemie Dillen (promotor), professor Jessie Dezutter promotor) en professor Anne Vandenhoeck

o Begin 2021 begon Csaba Szilagyi (PhD, KU Leuven) met een doctoraatsonderzoek over interprofessionele spirituele zorg vanuit het perspectief van de spiritueel zorgverlener bij professor Anne Vandenhoeck (promotor), professor Christina Puchalski (copromotor) en professor Betty Ferrell (copromotor).
Het spreekt voor zich dat deze wetenschappelijke paper de komende jaren nog aangevuld zal worden met nieuwe wetenschappelijke inzichten over het beroep van de spiritueel zorgverlener en de impact van dit beroep op de gezondheidszorg.
