Hazards Impacts Assessment for Hispaniola May 5 – May 11, 2011

Heavy rains observed in central Haiti and central Dominican Republic during the past week are expected to continue over the next seven days.

During the past week, heavy (> 50mm) rains fell across much of Hispaniola, with copious (> 100mm) amounts of rain observed over central Haiti and central Dominican Republic. Moderate to heavy (30-50mm) rainfall was also observed in southern Haiti during the past week. The above-average rainfall recorded during the past seven days has helped to reduce the thirty-day rainfall deficits, which Haiti has experienced during the past several weeks. However, total rainfall accumulated over Haiti during April still exhibited rainfall deficits ranging between 20 and 50mm. Rainfall forecasts for the next seven days suggest a continuation of moderate to heavy (30-50mm) rains across much of Hispaniola, with heavy (>50mm) rainfall expected over central portions of Dominican Republic and across southeastern Haiti. The continuation of seasonal rains during next week is expected to further reduce moisture deficits and benefit cropping activities in Haiti.
