Hazards Impacts Assessment for Hispaniola April 28 – May 4, 2011
Light rain continued over Haiti while moderate rainfall was observed across the Dominican Republic.
During the past week, locally moderate rain (15-30 mm) was observed across southern and central portions of the Dominican Republic.
The heaviest rainfall (30-40mm) was recorded along the southern coastline of the Dominican Republic. While moderate rain fell over portions of Hispaniola for a fourth consecutive week, it was less widespread compared to previous weeks. Climatologically, moderate rain is expected to cover much of Hispaniola during the final weeks of April. However, most of Haiti has continued to receive below- average rainfall leading to strengthening negative, thirty-day rainfall anomalies (20-75 mm). For the next seven days, though, rainfall is forecast to be moderate to heavy (20-50 mm) across much of Hispaniola with the heaviest rain falling over localized areas in southern and central Haiti and central and northeastern portions of the Dominican Republic. The increase in rain across Haiti should help to reduce negative, thirty-day rainfall anomalies and provide adequate moisture for cropping activities.
