Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

June 16 - 22, 2011

Recent heavy rains have helped create positive seasonal rainfall anomalies across Hispaniola.

During the past week, moderate to heavy rainfall was observed across much of Hispaniola. The heaviest rain (> 50 mm) was recorded across central and northern Dominican Republic. Elsewhere, moderate rain (10-40 mm) fell across much of Haiti and the southern Dominican Republic. Increased precipitation over the past couple of weeks across Hispaniola has helped create slightly positive seasonal rainfall anomalies (50-100 mm) across much of Haiti. The return of moderate to heavy rain after a dry start to the May-August rainy season has helped improve moisture and cropping conditions across Hispaniola. However, the abundant rain has also aided in the spread of cholera in recent weeks across numerous departments in Haiti as well as around the capital of Port-Au- Prince. Additional heavy rain could help to the spread the disease. For the next seven days, moderate rain (10-40 mm) is forecast across Hispaniola with the highest rainfall totals (> 50 mm) located over central Dominican Republic. Most of the rainfall should occur during the beginning of the observation period.
