Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET
June 23 - 29, 2011
Moderate rain was observed across much of Hispaniola during the past week.
Moderate rain (20-40 mm) fell over most of Hispaniola during the past seven days. The heaviest rainfall (> 40 mm) was observed across central Hispaniola including eastern Haiti and western Dominican Republic. While rainfall was not as torrential as it had been in previous weeks, the moderate weekly rainfall totals further created good cropping conditions throughout much of Haiti. The above- average June rains were necessary to improve moisture conditions in Haiti after a poor start to rains in May had caused short-term dryness. The recent rains have helped create moderate to strong thirty-day rainfall surpluses (50-200 mm) over much of Haiti.
However, the abundant rain in prior weeks has also aided in the spread of cholera throughout numerous departments of Haiti. Any additional localized heavy rain showers could worsen the situation. For the next week, models forecast light to moderate rainfall (10- 40 mm) over much of Haiti and the Dominican Republic with the highest rainfall totals located over eastern portions of the Dominican Republic.
