Hazards Impacts Assessment for Hispaniola December 9 – December 15, 2010
An increase in rainfall is forecast across northern and eastern portions of Hispaniola during the next week.
During the past seven days, precipitation totals were light across Hispaniola as the majority of Haiti and the Dominican Republic observed no rainfall. The highest rainfall totals (5-15 mm) were observed along the northern coastline of Hispaniola as well as the southern border region between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Climatologically, rainfall is generally light during this time of year across Hispaniola as drier conditions persist. The seasonally dry conditions have helped relieve areas that had received above-average precipitation and flooding during November. For the next week, rainfall totals are forecast to increase as rain showers associated with a stalled trough affect the island. The heaviest precipitation (30-50 mm) is forecast over the northern coastline of Hispaniola as well as the eastern half of the Dominican Republic while moderate rainfall totals (10-30 mm) are expected over most of Haiti.
