Hazards Impacts Assessment for Hispaniola November 18 – November 24, 2010
The absence of precipitation during the last week is expected to mitigate the impacts of flooding, and help to sustain recovery efforts throughout many local areas in Haiti.
During the last seven days, little to no precipitation was observed throughout Hispaniola. The highest rainfall accumulations (5-10mm) were mostly received along the southern coastline of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The departure of rainfall in Haiti in the last week is expected to provide relief after an anomalously wet November, and with the passage of Hurricane Tomas that produced torrential amounts of rainfall two weeks ago. The highest moisture surpluses remain along the southern coastline of Hispaniola, as many local areas in southern Haiti have experienced more than twice their normal rainfall during the last 30 days. Precipitation forecasts suggest a continuation of decreased rainfall throughout Hispaniola, with the heaviest rains (30-50mm) expected in northern Dominican Republic, and in some local areas in southeastern Haiti. The suppression of precipitation is expected to mitigate many areas affected by flooding, as well as many Cholera affected areas of Haiti.
