Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook May 29 – June 4, 2014

Enhanced rains across northern Hispaniola expected to help improve dry ground conditions.

During the last week, a favorable and widespread distribution of seasonal precipitation (>25mm) was received throughout Hispaniola. According to satellite rainfall estimates, the highest weekly accumulations were observed along the northern coastline of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, as well as, in the Grand’ Anse and Nippes departments of southern Haiti. Since late April, predominately above-average rainfall has continued to help mitigate anomalous dryness across northern Hispaniola.

Many of these areas have experienced a prolonged deficiency in rainfall and available ground moisture dating back to last year.

However, a slight suppression in rains across the central and southwestern Haiti have led to developing moisture deficits during the month of May. During the next seven days, precipitation forecasts suggest a favorable continuation of seasonal rains, with the highest amounts expected across central Dominican Republic.
