Climate Prediction Center’s Central Asia Hazards Outlook May 29 – June 4, 2014

Temperatures:

Temperatures remained above-normal across western Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan from May 18 – 24, while temperatures were below-normal across eastern Kazakhstan. Following unseasonably hot temperatures during early to mid-May, maximum temperatures remained at or below 25 degrees across north- central Kazakhstan. Above-normal temperatures are forecast for much of Central Asia during the next week with the largest positive temperature anomalies expected across Turkmenistan.

Precipitation

Abnormal dryness is posted for parts of north-central Kazakhstan where the Vegetative Health Index indicates below-average vegetation levels for this time of year. Light to moderate rain (local amounts up to 24 mm) fell across northern Kazakhstan from May 18-24. If more frequent rainfall occurs during early June, the abnormal dryness polygon may be removed in future outlooks. The GFS model indicates the potential for additional rainfall across northern Kazakhstan during the next week, while scattered showers and thundershowers can be expected across the mountains of Tajikistan and northern Afghanistan.

Note: The Hazards outlook map is based on current weather/climate information, short and medium range weather forecasts (up to 1 week), and assesses their potential impact on crop and pasture conditions. Shaded polygons are added in areas where anomalous conditions have been observed. The boundaries of these polygons are only approximate at this continental scale. This product does not reflect long range seasonal climate forecasts or indicate current or projected food security conditions.
