Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

Heavy rains were observed over central Haiti and northeastern Dominican Republic during the past week.
Active tropical waves have enhanced rainfall over localized areas of Hispaniola during the past week. Heavy (> 50mm) rains that fell over central Haiti and northeastern Dominican Republic were associated with the passage of a tropical wave during the past twenty four hours. Rains were average to above-average across the central portions of Hispaniola, but below-average over parts of western Haiti and northwestern Dominican Republic during the past seven days. On a thirty-day time scale, much of Hispaniola has experienced rainfall surpluses except localized areas over the L’Artibonite department of Haiti and Monte Cristi region and southern coasts of the Dominican Republic. As for the next seven days, moderate to locally heavy (30 – 75 mm) rains are expected to continue over Hispaniola, with the heaviest (> 75 mm) rains forecasted over the Grand’Anse and Ouest departments of Haiti and the central and northeastern regions of the Dominican Republic. The forecasted continuation of rains during the next week should, in general, favor cropping activities in the region.
