This thesis is the result of an extremely special year in my life where I had the opportunity to attend the LUMC epidemiology department. I come from a distant country with huge differences from The Netherlands, leaving my comfort zone provided me great personal and professional growth. For this reason, I could not fail to thank my supervisors, Frits, Suzanne and Willem.

To Professor Dr. Frits Rosendaal, Chief of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands, for the trust, support and teachings. For allowing, in a very gentle way, my participation in one of the most renowned services in epidemiology and hemostasis.

To Dr. Suzanne Cannegieter, Member of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands, for support, confidence, teachings, friendship and patience.

To Dr. Willem Lijfering, Member of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands, for support, confidence, teachings, friendship and patience. For helping to make my state in the Netherlands extremely profitable and enjoyable.

To Dr. Suely Meireles Rezende, Adjunct Professor of the Department of Clinical Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of UFMG, for valuable guidance, objective, safe, and patient. For teaching me how much we can add up if we share. Great facilitator of my work.

To Dr. Nelma Cristina Diogo Clementino, Retired Teacher of the Department of Complementary Propedeutics of the Faculty of Medicine of UFMG, my eternal and dear "boss". Always supporting me, person who made possible my exclusive dedication in hemostasis with unconditional support and trust.

To all friends of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands, for helping me in the most diverse situations during my stay in The Netherlands.

My wife, Ana Flavia, for love, affection and understanding, "because without you I am lost in the world", and for our 3 children who fill our lives with joy.

My father, José Euclides, for example as a person and doctor and unconditional support, my mother, Diva, for the touch of subjectivity, creativity, abstraction and mysticism in my life and my brothers who have
