The work, described in this thesis has been carried out between October 2013 and December 2017, at the Department of Cell Biology of the University Medical Center in Groningen. After a period of hard work, it is my pleasure to express my thanks to those, who supported me during this period. Here, I will especially thank the support from China Scholarship Council, my co-promotor Wia Baron, and my promotor Dick Hoekstra. I also owe many sincere thanks for the continuous support of my friends, and in particular to my family in China.

First, I wish to thank the China Scholarship Council that selected me as a candidate to continue my studies abroad. The financial and moral support I received is much appreciated. The experience I enjoyed has provided me great confidence and a positive perspective with regard to the future potential of China’s development. I sincerely hope that other Chinese students will similarly benefit from the support of the China Scholarship Council and like me, enjoy chances and opportunities abroad.

Of course, my daily supervisor and co-promotor Wia Baron is the next person to thank. In these four years, Wia has been a great support and mentor, which enabled me to realize the work, materialized in this PhD thesis. In this period, Wia was always prepared to discuss scientific research questions, and often made very useful suggestions for additional experiments to strengthen the quality of the work. Importantly, I am also very grateful to Wia for her major contribution in writing and organizing the contents of this thesis. I am sure it will help me in finding my way in a future research career.

My thanks are also due to my promotor Dick Hoekstra, who was of great help in the successful application for a scholarship with the Chinese Scholarship Council. As a first-time Chinese student abroad, he made me feel readily at ease and I enjoyed the frequent discussions we had about science as well as

daily life in the western hemisphere. From Dick, I saw what spirit a scientist should have. Every time, when I had questions and problems, Dick was always there to give true help. I also appreciate his instructive support of how to present my data, and his readiness in carefully checking the final manuscripts of my thesis.

Following, I will thank my students (Muhammad Nazmuddin, Rianne P. Gorter, Robbert Bulsink and Jasper van Beek) and colleagues. Muhammad, also thanks for introducing me to the culture and food of your home country, Indonesia. Rianne, thanks so much for finishing several experiments in my project, even after you left the lab. I will be looking forward to meet you again in the USA or China! Robbert, you not only contributed to my thesis work, also your friendship is much appreciated! Jasper, also your contributions were very useful. Besides, I also enjoyed the games we played: table tennis, tennis and darts, and thanks for the joined dinner. Also, my thanks to my colleagues Erik Sikkema and Leon Klunder, who were also of great help in stimulating to speak English with me, particularly in the early days when I had just joint the lab. Erik, thanks too for your great help with experiments at the time when I just started my work in Wia’s group. Jenny Dallinga, I very much appreciate your experimental contributions to my work and I thank Karin Klappe for her hospitality in offering me office space as well as for overall support. And for all the others at the 10th floor, although our paths crossed occasionally over bumpy roads, I wish to thank you for for helpful suggestions during the course of my work.

Finally, I would also like to thank another important group of people, my yolo (you only live once) group. Thanks guys, for your support, company and understanding in these four years. We travelled around Europe, Asia and Africa and spent a great time, sharing each other’s stories. Especially, for couple of
