Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET
August 15 – August 21, 2013
Dryness worsens in throughout southern Haiti.
In the last seven days, seasonally average amounts of rainfall were received throughout parts of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The highest weekly precipitation totals (>50mm) were observed across much of central Haiti, with lesser amounts observed in the northern and southern coastlines. While some local areas have received favorable rainfall amounts in the last week, the suppression of seasonal rainfall has resulted in strengthening moisture deficits across many parts of the Nord-Ouest, Grand Anse, Sud, Nippes, Ouest and Sud-Est departments of Haiti. The worst dryness has continued throughout parts of the Sud and Sud-Est departments of southern Haiti, where very few days of rainfall and growing moisture shortages have already negatively impacted cropping activities. For next week, average to below average precipitation amounts are forecast over Hispaniola which is likely to increase moisture deficits and negatively impact crop development.
