Improving surgical accuracy by lighting up tumors

1. Intra-operative margin assessment using fluorescent imaging agents enables the possibility for an immediate re-excision in case of a tumor-positive resection margin, which might decrease second surgery rates or post-operative adjuvant therapy. (this thesis)

2. Ex vivo imaging of the surgical specimen, followed by subsequent in vivo surgical cavity imaging, is a preferable imaging strategy for intra-operative margin assessment. (this thesis)

3. Tumor-type agnostic imaging agents exploiting tumor acidosis will expand the clinical applicability of fluorescence-guided surgery in a multitude of solid tumors. (this thesis)
