The work described in this thesis was performed as part of the research program of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and was carried provided by the EC’s Seventh Framework Programme LASERLAB EUROPE and the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM).

The cover shows an illustration of a pulse shaper, a device that was heavily used in the work leading to this thesis. In the back there are two camera images of the fluorescence emitted by Rb atoms when excited by counterpropagating shaped frequency comb laser pulses.
