Textual Edition with Commentary

1. Alterations to the text transmitted by the manuscripts are not always the result of textual critical criteria. Editorial interventions based on a priori interpretations of Plutarch’s De

facie should be avoided by all means. [Chapter 1]

2. The composition of Plutarch’s De facie should be (roughly) dated to the turn of the 1st century to the 2nd century. [Chapter 2]

3. The study of Plutarch’s De facie has been, up to date, dominated by the artificial binary science vs. myth. This understanding of the contents has negatively influenced the analysis of the treatise’s structure, which is then said to reflect this biased dichotomy. [Chapter 5] 4. In composing his treatise De facie quae in orbe lunae apparet Plutarch did not slavishly

follow his sources. He rather selected and adapted them to fit his own literary needs. [Chapter 6]

5. Philosophy is, according to Plutarch, the only path to attain Truth. [Chapter 5]

6. Due to its Platonic-Peripatetic background Plutarch’s understanding of ethics conceived of virtue as a mean between excess and deficiency. [Chapter 6]
