5.4 FINALE GEVOLGTREKKINGS

Hierdie studie het die grootskaalse aard en omvang van die kankerdiagnose van ʼn kind op gesinsfunksionering ondersoek. Deelnemers het aangedui hoe hierdie diagnose gesinsfunksionering beïnvloed en die verskeie uitdagings wat bepaal hoe die gesin sal aanpas. Die kwessie van veerkragtigheid van gesinne is ook bespreek in terme van faktore soos onder andere ondersteuning, kommunikasie en kohesie. Die impak van ʼn kankerdiagnose by ʼn kind op die gesin het gedui hoe daar reaksies soos angstigheid en woede te wagte kan wees. Hierdie reaksies sluit nou aan by die fases van rou en verlies. Die hele kwessie van ondersteuning is deurgaans beklemtoon en die verskillende tipes ondersteuning wat gebied kan word, is uiteengesit. Ondersteuningsnetwerke soos uitgebreide familie en professionele persone is ook uitgelig.

Die noodsaaklike rol van die maatskaplike werker in die multidissiplinêre span het sterk na vore gekom in die studie. Verskeie intervensiemetodes is na verwys en weereens is daar verwys na die noodsaaklikheid van ondersteuning aan gesinne. Sekere uitdagings ten opsigte van dienslewering in Suid-Afrika is ook aangedui soos gebrek aan toerusting en dienslewering aan minderbevoorregte gemeenskappe. Die kwessie van bewusmaking is ook gemeld as noodsaaklik ten einde wanopvattings van kankerdiagnose by ʼn kind aan te spreek.
