5.4 Beperkingen van het onderzoek en aanbevelingen voor vervolgonderzoek
Net als ieder onderzoekt kent dit een aantal beperkingen. Ten eerste is de enquête enkel afgenomen onder accountants met de functie assistent of senior van één van de vier internationale accountantsorganisaties in Nederland en België. De resultaten van dit onderzoek zijn daarom mogelijk niet generaliseerbaar voor accountants met een andere functie, die werkzaam zijn in een ander land of die werkzaam zijn bij een ander accountantskantoor. Echter, door ervoor te kiezen de streekproef van de enquête te verspreiden over alle locaties van de onderzochte accountantsorganisatie binnen Nederland en België is beoogd deze beperking van generaliseerbaarheid te verminderen. Vervolgonderzoek zou zich kunnen richten op accountants die werkzaam zijn bij elk van de vier internationale accountantsorganisaties, met een grotere verscheidenheid aan functies van de accountants en die werkzaam zijn in een grotere verscheidenheid aan landen. Het is hierbij bovendien van belang dat de deelnemers aan het onderzoek zoveel mogelijk verschillen op de relevante cultuurdimensies, in dit onderzoek was dit bij de dimensie onzekerheidsvermijding nauwelijks het geval.
Ten tweede was de kennis van de deelnemers aan de enquête mogelijk te beperkt voor het beantwoorden van de vraag aan de hand van de casus over met welk saldo van de rekening “Equipment” zij akkoord zouden gaan.44
Bij vervolgonderzoek zou geborgd moeten worden dat de kennis van de deelnemers aansluit bij de voor het invullen van de meetinstrumenten benodigde kennis.
Ten derde is er in dit onderzoek gekozen voor één proxy voor het meten van de sceptische eigenschappen en twee proxys voor het meten van het sceptisch handelen. Zoals genoemd is er voor het meten van sceptisch handelen geen universeel geaccepteerde meetwijze. Andere proxys, bijvoorbeeld degene gebruikt door Quadackers et al. (2014) of Rasso (2015) zouden tot andere resultaten kunnen leiden. Vervolgonderzoek zou naast de in dit onderzoek gebruikte proxy’s van sceptisch handelen ook andere proxys kunnen gebruiken en de resultaten hiervan met elkaar kunnen vergelijken. Hetzelfde geldt voor het meten van de sceptische eigenschappen gebruikte meetschaal van Hurtt (2010).45
Zoals eerder genoemd is PS een multidimensionaal construct, iedere meetschaal meet een ander gedeelte van het construct PS en het gebruik van een andere meetschaal zou tot andere resultaten kunnen leiden.
Ten vierde, dataverzameling door middel van het houden van een enquête brengt een beperking met zich mee. De deelnemers dienen de enquête immers zelfstandig in te vullen en de enquête is daardoor onderhevig aan subjectiviteit. Er bestaat hierdoor altijd de mogelijkheid dat een vraag onduidelijk is, verkeerd wordt geïnterpreteerd of dat er sociaalwenselijke antwoorden worden gegeven. In vervolgonderzoek zou hierop ingespeeld kunnen worden door voor een onderzoeksmethode te kiezen die minder aan subjectiviteit

onderhevig is of om ervoor te zorgen dat men aanwezig is bij het afnemen van de enquête. In een setting waarbij men aanwezig is bij het afnemen van de enquête kunnen ter plekke vragen van de deelnemers worden beantwoord.
Tot slot is de realiteit van de casus een mogelijke beperking van dit onderzoek. Uit de resultaten kwam naar voren dat hier geen overeenstemming over bestaat bij de deelnemers van de enquête. De gevonden verbanden zouden mogelijk sterker zijn geweest bij een realistischere casus. Bij vervolgonderzoek zou indien gebruik wordt gemaakt van een casus moeten worden gezorgd voor een zo realistisch mogelijke casus.
