Gewoonlijk wordt aangenomen dat de Jakobus die in Hand. 12:17; 15:13 en 21:18 genoemd wordt “Jakobus de broeder des Heren” is. Dit kan echter uit Lucas-Handelingen zelf niet worden afgeleid, want daar wordt geen enkele broer van Jezus bij name genoemd. De identificatie lijkt eerder vanuit de brief aan de Galaten, waar wel sprake is van “Jakobus de broeder des Heren” (Gal. 1:19), in Lucas-Handelingen te worden ingelezen.
Dit proefschrift behelst een onderzoek naar de identiteit van Jakobus in Hand. 12:17; 15:13 en 21:18, eerst en vooral in het licht van de literaire en narratieve conventies van de auteur van Lucas-Handelingen zelf (Deel I). Kerntekst is Hand. 12:17, waar zijdelings melding wordt gemaakt van een Jakobus, maar zonder dat duidelijk wordt gemaakt om welke Jakobus het precies gaat. Op grond van de manier waarop de auteur nieuwe personages introduceert en personages met dezelfde naam van elkaar onderscheidt, moet worden geconcludeerd dat het bij de Jakobus van Hand. 12:17 om “Jakobus de zoon van Alfeüs” gaat, die in Hand. 1:13
uitdrukkelijk als één van de twaalf apostelen wordt genoemd. Dit leidt tot een plausibelere interne samenhang van het narratief dan wanneer het om “Jakobus de broeder des Heren” zou gaan.
