Samenvatting: While some museums are expanding their exhibition programmes, or choose to collaborate with institutions with different expertise than their own, the Centraal Museum is investing in a programme which centres on the relations between the artists and the public. In The Museum as Workshop, the museum is more a place for production than a place for reflection. Artists work on location in the museum, and visitors have the opportunity to experience art in a different, much more active way.
The purpose of this reader is to bring this workshop model into discussion from a broader perspective. What sense does it make for a museum to strive to achieve a participatory experience of art?

Bierens constateert dat er weer gouden tijden aanbreken voor de ambachtelijkheid. De terugkerende interesse voor oude technieken staat niet op zichzelf maar gaat samen met de omarming van nieuwe middelen als de 3D printer, waardoor het mogelijk is geworden om vrijwel alles zelf te maken. De digitale revolutie ontstijgt het virtuele stadium en stelt ons in staat om ook weer fysiek grip te krijgen op de dingen. Bierens analyseert hoe het ambacht wordt verlost van het stoffige imago dat het kreeg in de twintigste eeuw. Hij onderzoekt aan de hand van de kunsttheorie de gespannen verhouding tussen het technisch kunnen van de kunstenaar en 'de heiligverklaring van ideeën en theorieën'. Misschien is het verschil tussen idee en ambacht wel helemaal niet zo groot als we altijd denken. Misschien is het belangrijkste verschil wel tijd: hoe mooi kan het zijn als kunstenaars van ideeën uitgaan die ze in het werk zelf, puur door de duur van het
maakproces, ook weer overstijgen.
