DANKWOORD

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who, in one way or another, contributed to the creation and completion of this thesis.

To start with, I would like to thank Professor Tom Huizinga, Professor Rene Toes, and Dr.

Annette van der Helm for being my mentors. Tom, I admire your marvellous enthusiasm for work and collaboration which gave me the chance to be here in the LUMC to start my fellowship and I do appreciate your continuous support which led me to complete my thesis.

Rene, it was always a pleasure to have you around during all the meetings and discussions.

Your critical approach and valuable remarks were always a good way of brain storming and always improved our research. Annette, thanks for always being available to reply my queries and your meticulous yet very quick and remarkable feedback. I want to express my gratitude to my Egyptian professors who always have been supporting, teaching and guiding me especially Professor Nashwa Tawfik and Professor Mahmoud Ashry.

Moving to the Netherlands to start my fellowship in the Department of Rheumatology in LUMC was a great adventure. I have spent some great years and gained a lot of scientific and life experiences. I must admit that life was not easy at sometimes, but what made it fun to be here was the good company of my colleagues especially those of room C1-45 and C1-46. I will never forget our funny yet productive conversations and discussions, support for each other both in work as well as personal related matters, and the best of all our lunch outs.

Hopefully I won’t forget anybody, Michael, Onno, Robert, Sjoerd, Melek, Naomi, Jessica, Karen, Emalie, Rosanne, Linda, Diane, Rosaline, Angga, and Wing-Yee.

The lab group, thank you all, I have learned a lot from you all. Rute, thanks for your active and thorough collaboration and help. Joris, Andrea, Gerrie, Aleida, Nivine, Ellen, Hanan, and everyone else thank you very much for your help and very friendly attitude. Stefan, you were really helpful in the methodology and design of gene copy number articles even when you moved to Australia, thanks for that. Jeanine, thank you, your help with statistics were pivotal

to many of the manuscripts in this thesis. Not to forget the people of the staff-centrum, Hanny, Joyce, Hughine and José thank you all for helping with all the official and paper work.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to my friends in Leiden and their families who were and still are like a family to me; Bakr Morsy, Attia Abdelbaki, Ali Marashdeh, Mahmoud Al Saify, Mohamed Ghaly, Umar Ryad, Mohamed Myqias, Ayman Khairy, Ibrahim Bayoumi, Khalid Younes, Taleb Alkurdi and Mohamed Alhissi.

I am also indebted to my entire family in Egypt for always being there for me even during the most difficult times especially my parents for their endless wisdom and continuous support.

Last but not least, my wife Randa, I cannot express how wonderful, supportive and caring you have been. Thanks for always being there for me and thanks for bearing with me through those times. None of this would have been possible without you. And kids, although you were distracting me, I have to admit I enjoyed and still enjoying it, you could always draw smiles on my face.
