Here I am, at the end of a very big chapter of my life, getting ready for new ones to start.
It was an exciting and exploratory journey that took a bit longer, but offered some really nice side quests and rewards in return. However, this was certainly not a solitary journey, and these pages are dedicated to people who helped and supported me along the way.
First and foremost, this project would have not been possible without my two supervisors – Jennifer Spenader and Hamida Demirdache. Back in 2014, they organized a joint project and (sort of blindly) offered me a position to be their PhD student. All of a sudden, I was given a possibility to do a double degree program, and the months and years that followed were completely surreal and exhilarating.
Jennifer, you made me feel so welcome at the AI department and I was instantly relaxed around you, which made the whole experience of starting a PhD very enjoyable. Your approach was to give me practical skills as soon as possible and I remember that one of the first things I did when I started was a small pilot experiment. You taught me all about the experimental design and statistical analysis at the very beginning, so I had plenty of time to improve in those areas. For that, I will be eternally grateful. Thank you for all the ideas, feedback and comments on my work, small talks, guidance, encouragement, friendliness, optimism and positive energy that you always exude.
Hamida, it took some time before we actually had the opportunity to work together more regularly. But once that happened, I felt supported by you and it was clear to me that you really care about this project and my topic, and that was really motivating. I will never forget our long and fruitful meetings, interrupted by tasty food and your playful cats. We had so many discussions and eureka moments that it was really a
pleasure to work together and figure out all the little details. Your vast theoretical knowledge and insight into many linguistic phenomena were always making our conversations more interesting. Thank you for your motivation, dedication and persistence, guidance, advice and everlasting curiosity about linguistics.
I am looking forward to our future projects and collaborations! I will start with my dear paranymphs – people who agreed to be part of my defense ceremony years ago and didn’t back down.
Anna, we have shared many things in our PhD journey, starting from our name. We had the same supervisor, a similar topic, and now we are even defending in the same year. Thank you for being there for me both professionally and personally – I always enjoyed our get-togethers, discus-sions and good ol’ venting (usually while having tasty food). Our trip to Boston was unforgettable and I think ‘two A(n)nas on tour’ should have a sequel! (I know you said basically the same thing in your own book, it just shows that great minds think alike). Thank you for the support and care you always showed and I am looking forward to our future encounters in whatever context there is. Rik, there is always money in the banana stand!
Stipe, our Balkan vibes are strong! Isn’t it hilarious that one of the first things we did was to figure out how to share an office together? Thank you for being a good friend and colleague and for patiently listening to me when I needed to (loudly) vent about many different things. Sharing an office with you (although not for a very long time) was always a pleasure and it just seemed natural. Thankfully, our connection did not end there – we are now sort-of colleagues in Utrecht, well, at least our offices are close by, so I guess you just can’t get rid of me. I am really happy we are also neighbors, so, good times are ahead! I cannot close this section without mentioning Stipe’s wife Karmen, who is almost my third paranymph. Karmen, I enjoy our talks, our Harry Potter and superhero obsessions, Oscar nights, binging Disney movies and regularly going to the cinema (when that was allowed). It is great having you as a friend and having our lives so weirdly intertwined all the time.
Speaking of Balkan vibes, my Dutch life was actually quite influenced by a ‘Balkan crew’ I met along the way, and who are, despite being scattered all over the Netherlands (and the world), still an important part of my life. A huge thank you goes to Maja P., who was the musical prodigy of my remote Balkan family and who always made me laugh with engaging storytelling; to Srđan, my Netflix buddy, who was always up for a coffee break anytime, anywhere in town; to Jelena, who gave me my first gig when I moved to Groningen and who always had time for a good-quality chat; to Maja Ć., who was always kind and encouraging, and gave me an opportunity to be the first and only native speaker of her invented language – it was truly a fun experience; to Irena, who was so nice and generous to offer her cozy

My second university is in a city that is also the home of the amazing rock/ metal festival Hellfest – Nantes. What a coincidence that was! In the same year of 2014, I first discovered Nantes via Hellfest and then learned I would actually be studying there – such a small world!
Even in Nantes I connected to a small Balkan vibe – so, I want to thank Nataša, for giving me a chance to assist her in her experiments, for inspiring me to continue researching this strange little word in our native language and for always being helpful and supportive. She started this whole story, I simply followed.
Although I haven’t spent a lot of time at the University of Nantes, I have made some great friends there. Elizabeth, Samantha and Kryzzya – chicas, thank you for your constant help with French administration, for being a great support whenever I was in Nantes and for accepting me in your group (+ regularly going to crêperies).
Yet another research group I belonged to was SynSem, as part of the Lin-guistic Lab (LLING) at the University of Nantes. There, I met and worked with a lot of colleagues who were always approachable and kind to have a meeting with me during my short visits to Nantes. Thank you, Orin, Oana and Anamaria, for valuable discussions and constructive feedback I got
from you. Further thanks to Marta, for agreeing to be part of my Examining Committee for the defense and for having a very fruitful discussion that led to the completion of my book. And, of course, thank you, Jiyoung, for being so helpful with the Korean experiments and translating everything for me – these experiments really made a difference. Hvala vam na svemu! Moja (mnogobrojna) porodica je uvek bila uz mene i podržavala me u svakakvim hirovima i planovima koje sam vrlo često imala. Njihova otvorenost, fleksibilnost i verovanje u mene su mi definitivno otvorili vrata ka drugačijem životu i raznim mogućnostima. Bez takve podrške jednostavno ne bih bila tu gde jesam, tako da su poslednji pasusi ovih zahvalnica posvećeni mojoj porodici, mom izvoru snage.
Ova knjiga i ovo istraživanje je posvećeno mojoj tetki Jadranki, koja više nije sa nama, a koja je uvek bila srećna i ponosna što sam se opredelila za lingvistiku, što radim doktorat, što sam joj koleginica, što sam postigla puno i nisam odustala. Što se tiče mog puta do lingvistike koji će sad biti obeležen i doktoratom, mislim da bih trebala da počnem od samog početka. Sve je krenulo od osnovne škole, tako da prvo želim da se zahvalim nastavnici Branki i nastavnici Radmili, zbog kojih volim lingvistiku, gramatiku i engleski jezik. Sada izgleda da su sva takmičenja i svi naši časovi i razgovori mogli da imaju samo jedan ishod, a to je da studiram engleski i da se specijalizujem za lingvistiku.
Tokom studiranja sam, takođe, imala jaku podršku profesora sa departmana za anglistiku. Želim posebno da zahvalim Sabini, što mi je bila mentor, inspiracija, podrška a kasnije i koleginica sa kojom je uvek zadovoljstvo sarađivati. Hvala Maji, što je znala pre mene da ću da studiram lingvistiku i što je bila ubeđena da je to pravi izbor za mene. Hvala Nataši M. i Tanji, što su mi predložile Groningen kao mesto gde ima najviše smisla otići na razmenu i što su me dalje inspirisale da ostanem u lingvistici. Hvala Elizabeth, što mi je uvek nesebično pomagala oko raznih prijava, motivacionih pisama i preporuka. Hvala Nataši P., Gordani i Vanji, kao i celokupnoj ekipi iz NSLing grupe, posebno Nini, za šetnje, kafe, diskusije, radionice i konferencije na kojima smo se sreli.
