Acknowledgement
With the last few pages, I would like to gratefully acknowledge those who contributed to this thesis and helped me during the past years.
First and foremost, I give my deepest and utmost gratitude to Prof. Andreas Herrmann who offered me the chance to work in the field of polymer chemistry and bioengineering. Your interdisciplinary experiences, brilliant, passion and determination in science have facilitated the progress of my work. Your continuous encouragement and trust were especially supportive when I encountered difficulties, which motivated me to solve them. Apart from that, I will never forget the fruitful time to sit with you together and draft our manuscripts, as well as the discussion of scientific questions. Prof. Herrmann, it was a great time for me to work with you and thank you very much for all the guidance and help.
Next, I would like to thank the members of the reading committee: Prof. M.M.G. Kamperman, Prof. M. Kwak, and Prof. S.R. Das. Thank you very much for your time and efforts in reading and approving this thesis. Your valuable comments helped me improve the manuscript.
Additionally, I would like to show my gratitude to Jan Willem. You helped me a lot, not only in scientific research, but also in my life. You helped me in relocation, Dutch translation, taught me how to use iDEAL and etc. Your help eased my life in this new country. You and Agnieszka are always helpful, positive and patient to discuss any questions. I have to say you are my best office mates.
Manfred, you are the first and best biologist I ever worked with in Groningen. I appreciate your patient, humorous, logical and critical thinking. It was so impressive to work with you in the plasmid extraction and protein express. Thank you so much to

teach me these bio-techniques hand by hand. By the way, your slow speaking is so contrast to your high efficiency in experiments.
Lifei and Kai, you help me a lot in my scientific research. I really appreciate your advice and our collaborations. Your solid knowledge and passion in science always motivate me to work hard and challenge myself. Hope both of you can achieve remarkable successes in the academy.
Moreover, I would like to gratefully acknowledge the support of other group members. Many thanks to Jennifer, Deepak, Minseok, Diego, Alina, Alberto, Andreas, Anke, Pavlo, Eliza, Jingyi, Lei, Zhuojun, Qing, Tiancai, Chao and Hongyan. It was a great pleasure to work with you in the same group. Jun and Pei, thank you so much to support my work in DNA-lipids complexes. Without your hard work, the publication may not come true.
Finally, I would like to show my special thanks to Mengsu, my wife, for everything. Thank you so much to stay with me, no matter how difficult the situation is, from China to The Netherlands. I can always feel your trust that we can deal with all the troubles. You make my life meaningful. Here I want to sing a song to you “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray. You'll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away.” Also great thanks to my parents and parents in law for constant support for my study. Without your efforts, I can’t persevere to the last.
